Microsoft to close its Skype Office in London

Tech Giant Microsoft has announced to shutter up its Skype Office in London(UK), laying off a hundreds of employees. Microsoft’s annual report in august said that it would lay off approximately 2850 employees globally in the fourth quarter of the year and the company moved with the closing of its Skype HQ in London on a large scale termination.

The step means that over 400 employees are going to loose their work. Microsoft told the Financial Times

” it made the decision to unify some engineering positions, potentially putting at risk a number of globally focused Skype and financial roles”,

and will be entering into a consultation process to help those affected by the redundancies.

“We are deeply committed to doing everything we can to help those impacted through the process,” it said.

Russ Shaw, founder of industry group Tech London Advocates and previously vice-president of Skype Emea said that –

“This is disappointing. Skype is one of Europe’s iconic technology businesses and a genuine ‘unicorn’ with an amazing pedigree of innovation and talent,”

Shaw left the company when it was sold to Microsoft.

While London is working hard to build a strong base of world-class technology businesses, this decision is a step in the wrong direction.
